On May 8, 2013, the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and Scottsburg Police Department were involved in a vehicle pursuit. While patrolling US 31, Deputy Herald encountered a motorcycle that was traveling at a speed of 82 MPH. When he attempted to stop the motorcycle, the driver sped off at speeds well over 100 MPH. The driver, Patrick Mantia (03-23-1978), continued eluding law Enforcement throughout the county until he crashed on State Road 203, south of the stone quarry. Both he and passenger Ashley Vernon (03-08-1989) were thrown from the motorcycle. Vernon sustained a severe head injury and was flown to the University of Louisville Hospital for treatment. Mantia was treated and released to Sheriff’s Office custody. He was charged with Fleeing Law Enforcement Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, Driving While Suspended (Prior) and Reckless Driving. While medical staff was tending to Vernon, she was found to have Methamphetamine, scheduled drugs and paraphernalia on her person.
